What We Mean By Debating
There are bound to be differences of interpretation of Scripture, application of verses to the life, how liberally or conservatively moral precepts are to be exhorted. There are bound to be posts that question the facticity of a claim or statement and ask for substantiation or sources.
Posts that ask questions for clarification of a members’ meanings are completely normal, Posts that express disagreement with a member's statements are allowed. Posts that correct what a member believes are mis-statements of fact are allowed. Even where allowed, comments must not be abusive, belittling, desultory, or mean-spirited. This may be perceived as contradictory to our rule against debating.
Forms of debating that are disallowed are posts that are contentious, argumentative, defamatory, which belittle or put down members who disagree or post comments of which others are offended. Posts that continue to make argumentative comments when it’s clear each side has made their points is the kind of debating that is disallowed. Again, asking a poster to clarify or support claims or statements is normal in forum activity, as long as it is respectful and promotes a peaceful exchange of ideas between members.
