The Clio Coffee Maker
If your Keurig has overstayed its welcome, this unit makes a faux espresso that is rather good. It is fast and convenient, and offers three modes – Espresso, Coffee, and Tea water
It uses a thermoblock quick heater which also applies sufficient pressure to produce enough crema to satisfy most enthusiasts. Coffee pods are proprietary so they aren’t available outside the Clio website. Clio offers a light roast, a medium and dark roast, and one decaf selection.
Review
The Clio “C” coffee option is the counterpart to Keurig’s standard brew function. In my opinion it is underwhelming with a bitter result. The Coffee feature does not produce crema and adds a large portion of hot water which is programmed and can’t be adjusted.
The “E” espresso option produced the best brewing. However, I found the medium and dark roast pods to be bitter and too strong. The only pods that made a very good espresso-like brew are the light roast pods, labeled “Rise and Shine.”
As for flavor, Clio does a consistent brew during the time period between cleanings.
Cost
The Clio is a bit more than the average Keurig, but is not exorbitantly expensive.
The down side of the Clio is the cost of its pods which you can’t economize by buying elsewhere. If you do at least two cups a day, the subscription for 60 is $50.00 per month plus shipping. Four cups a day would double that.
You can avoid a subscription which may give you too much coffee per month. But as a “pay-as-you-go” you only get a choice of ten pod packs at $12.50 each. Shipping adds $6.00 to $8.00 to an order. Ten pods won’t last a month, so you are obligated to buy at least three packs, which makes a $37.50 monthly order, then add shipping. But that’s 30 pods - one cup per day. Compare this to Keurig at 80 pods for $40.00 before shipping. If you’re an avid coffee drinker, pay-as-you-go would be hugely expensive – upwards of $120 per month.
As a cheaper alternative for coffee pods, the LavAzza Blue machine makes a very similar quality espresso brew in single and double. Pods are a fraction of the cost for Clio pods.
